PostSubject: Need Some AEM EMS Help   Wed Feb 16, 2011 8:15 pm

I want to run AEM on the supra to get rid of the shitty MAF and be able to go full retard with tuning and potentially nitrous, run E85 etc. I know AEM is the boss and worth the RIDICULOUSLY expensive cost, my question is about tuning with it. The plug and play kit for the supra also says it needs other components to really kick ass like:

3.5 Bar MAP Sensor
Inlet Air Temperature Sensor
EGT Sensor Kit
Boost Control Solenoid
Coolant Temp. Sensor Kit

I know these sensors are somewhat optional if I'm keeping the Maf...but why would I? From what I've read there is some pin connecting and wiring that needs to be done to install the sensors and shit all of which needs to be done prior to tuning.

I really want to buy this bitch and do it up but I'm afraid I might get in over my head so does anyone have experience with this shit??

Here's the kit I'm looking at and the AEM sensors: http://www.jscspeed.com/catalog/Toyota/87_92_Supra/Electronics/AEM_EMS_for_87_92_Toyota_Supra/AEM_EMS.html

I know it's expensive, but unlike most people on other car forums I think tuning is the most important part or building a turbo, nitrous, E85 car.

I haven't tuned with AEM EMS, but fairly familiar with some other programs and wouldn't mind lending a hand or some advice in general.

I have to say skip the EGT and get a wideband instead.

+1 on a wideband
You can do closed loop real-time tuning and a wideband is a must

How much boost do you plan to run? (Map sensor)
I think you'll need the IAT sensor if you convert to speed density, which you should.
A BCS helps for boost control, can improve spool.
Coolant temp sensor.. dont know why this would matter

The AEM software is pretty user friendly. Their standalone is good, and compared with Motec or Bosch, it's a bargain.

Peter, that system is more capable than my setup I run now and I paid more. The AEM didn't come out until about two years after I had my standalone PFC setup.

Maf's tend to offer better driveability. They did in the past, but IMO the new software is so good there is no reason not to use a Map/temp sensor setup. I wish I could do that in my car.

Definitely run the boost solenoid. I think the AEM can do boost by gear with that little guy. It will also be cheaper than running a stand alone boost controller.

Get the coolant temp sensor, being able to log coolant temperatures can be helpful. I think the AEM can control fans too with a relay, you set the parameters to turn the fan on.

This is all by memory, but the AEM is a great unit IMO. If I had to do it again I would do either that or haltech platnium stuff.

Don't apologize to me. I would give mine up in a heartbeat if it didn't cost another 2 grand.

Doesn't AEM eliminate the need for a MAF?

Yeah, but you need to buy the IAT and MAP setup to do it. No big deal. You can run it either way.

Ok, I'm not very savvy on this stuff yet but the MAF is in front of the intake and measures air flow correct? I was just under this impression because I see a lot of the turbo cars with a filter stuck on the turbo.

Maf is before the turbo right after the airfilter. It's a big restriction and looks like shit and it has to go. It's one of the main reasons I want to run AEM.

I wasn't expecting such a good response! I appreciate all the feedback, it's good to know there are some people here with experience in this since I have none. I definitely will run a wideband and want to convert to speed density. I think the GM map sensors are quite a bit cheaper than AEM so that's a good suggestion. I won't be running over 30 pounds of boost anytime soon so I don't think I wll need the five bar.

Thanks again for the help, I guess now all I have to do is order it.

the aem can do/control anything/literally. there is no way someone can use all the features the ems offers. that said their add ons that you listed would be all you really need & extremely simple to install except for the egt of course. go with their wideband and it would be a killer system and reasonably priced considering the versatility of the system. beware of the depth & capabilities though. i have seen many inexperienced tuners not use the potential of the ems.

btw i can beat those ems (any aem) prices by hundreds & the 1130 is available next day/no shipping. my aem supplier stocks literally everything (except the 1110) so lmk when youre ready.

Good to know, I will definitely PM you. Also, I in o way intend to do an initial tune on this myself. It will get a protune and then I will fuck with it here and there and learn.

me and a few other people are running the gm style omni map sensors. Maybe something you want to look into.

Only complaint is the pinout is different Smile Always a good feeling when you try to first get it running.
