PostSubject: GTO's   Tue Apr 19, 2011 4:24 am

I am seriously considering a 04-06 GTO for a everyday car, basically I like the practicality of them while still having a Jesus motor. So I need somebody to talk me out of it because I am having a hard time finding a negative about owning one.

As a daily I'd get an 04 just because of cost.

Handling is fine, though I guess it depends on what you are trying to do or compare it to. I had a decent suspension setup on my last car, the GTO is better IMO. Nothing wrong with the IRS either as there are plenty of single digit GTOs on it.
People tend to forget that the GTO is much more a GT car than a sports car. Once that is accepted, IMO it's a pretty nice ride. It's dangerously easy to drive fast in it and not realize it. It's nice up in the triple digits too.... stable and just wants to keep going. Interior is really nice and comfy even for taller and big folk. Pretty decent seats and legroom in the rear also. It's Holden and not Pontiac.

Things to look for:
If the front struts are original, it's a good chance they're bad.
If the radius rod bushings are original, it's a good chance they're bad.
Rear spring sag is VERY common.
04s had some radiator leaks here and there
Check fuel line that runs to the rail in the engine compartment for chaffing on the plastic cover.

Fitting tires on it is a bit of a challenge. Fender rolling and grinding here and there is required for larger sizes in the rear.

If you're looking, I'd snatch one up sooner than later, prices are going back already for summer time.

I seriously considered buying a GTO as a DD. That was one of the first GM products (yeah I know it's an aussie car) that I was actually impressed with the quality of trim and assembly on.

I say do it.

I would daily one anytime.

They arent the quickest, kinda bland/blahh and do not live up to the GTO rep. But with an LS and some time you can make what you want of it.

I always laugh at that one. What exact rep are you talking about? The fact that the LS2 GTO is faster, more powerful, and handles better than the originals? I'll hear the typical, "that's not a real GTO" at shows from old guys in their GTO... wait Tempest. Pontiac should have never called it the GTO, but they did. The look is a love hate thing. Blah is good for people like me who like to slide under the radar. All of the other cars I was looking at screamed look at me.

True they aren't the quickest, but in 06 they held their own just fine It is a 5 year old car..... I'm looking at running high 12's this year with a heavy weight stereo, street trim, and street tires. I should porking the scales around 4100 with me in it. I've spent a fair amount less than $1K on engine mods, including tuning..... seems alright to me.

Thanks for nothing guys. Cool

I am looking into getting a 04 since I am not a big fan of the ram air hood, I also don't care about 50 extra horse since it will just be more of a "get my as around " type car. As you can imagine I am not super concerned about handling, I am sorry to say I am more interested in ride comfort.

So how big of a tire can you get on the back?

Tires... going of my fuzzy memory today.

OE 17" comes with 245. That is all you're going to squease up front without different rims and spacers. My 18" 245 Star Specs seem to run wide and I'm checking them here and there for rear fender rub as she has a heavy bottom. So far so good. If you get drag bags or "drag springs" and roll / cut the outer fender I think I remember people fitting 265 on the 8" rim. YMMV but that seems like a wide tire for 8". Widened rims or something different with the above and control arm notching I think I've seen 295 back there. I THINK someone is doing a mail order mini-tub now....

I can't remember the spacing, but GTOs share the same size as current Bimmers. GTOs just have a junky offset.

FWIW, 04 have the smaller brakes. Used 05-06 can be had for a decent price.

What's the matter with the hood, mild compared to 4G F-bodies Smile It's not ram either.... Pontiac added them to make it look more aggressive.

The fact the ram hood looks aggressive is the reason I don't want it, when cops see it go by I don't want them to look twice at it.

But that might just be impossible since one of the things I would definitely do is get new wheels, which is why I asked about tires.
