Ok, so as some of you know I've been actively working to sell my 1970. Well for shits and giggles I put up trades welcome....just in cases something caught my eye.

Well I have got the usual offers of rat rods, harley's, and trucks. Yet one did come up that kind of interested me.

1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Here is the kicker, it is a very straight car and the guy will build it to my specs meaning I get to pick color, hood and rims. Interior wise it looks good, better then the Coronet for sure.

Now engine has me concerned, it is a 351 Cleveland!!! Honest to god I've seen plenty of windsors, but never had much of a dealing with a Cleveland. This is what intrigued me a bit.

What can you ford guys tell me about these engines? Also could you point me in a direction to learn more about them.

Thanks,

Mike

So you have the Coronet and instead of selling it you want to have this instead?

Well, the Cleveland heads were the best stock heads made by ford... of course, modern day aftermarket castings kick their ass hands down. As far as factory specs, the Cleveland is better than the Windsor, but the Windsor has a better aftermarket. The Cleveland has a lower deck height because of the big heads, so if you wanted to go big cubes it would be better to use a Windsor block. A lot of people say they had oiling issues, and thats why ford went to the Windsor, but thats bullshit IMHO. Honestly though, dollar for dollar, a Cleveland will put out more power and torque than a Windsor. Keep in mind though, finding original parts for that motor can be a pain, as they weren't used in the U.S. for years. Windsors on the other hand, are a dime a dozen.

As far as info, I'd look into some Mustang forums that have a healthy following for the older cars. I'm sure there are many "C" owners around!

I'm not saying one way or another yet, just exploring options. I'm just thinking stuff out and was intrigued by the Cleveland engine

Thanks Kevin, that was as I feared. Parts would br difficult, this is partly why I have avoided touching an Amc. Practicality always trumps novelty.

Well, let me put it this way. The parts aren't as plentiful as parts for the Windsor, but they DO exist. There are a bunch of aftermarket companies that make parts for Cleveland, I didn't mean to make it sound like it was impossible to find parts. Smile

If it were me, I'd use Cleveland heads on a Windsor block, and punch it out a bit. Smile

well, i don't think he's looking to make it a numbers matching original engine and in that case there are plenty of aftermarket parts available. You can make good power with the cleveland but, im with jd and peter on that body style, yuck.

You know this feels awfully familiar to the times my buddies would save me from some of those 2 am beauties that would try and entangle me as I was leaving the bar! Laughing

Thanks guys
