PostSubject: Powdercoating   Wed Feb 29, 2012 12:08 am

So I'm looking at getting my wheels powder coated black....anyone on here do this? Or know anyone that does?

Maybe someone on here said they do, but searching forums makes me sick to my stomach. Thanks for the help.

Ole? I think he can do wheels now, he has a large enough oven.

Ole does not do wheels. He was almost going to do wheels but he just moved his shop and will not be ready to do this anytime soon. I just called him today about the exact same thing.

I saw a truck driving around that said they do powder coating on the side of it but I don't remember the name of the company which makes this a mostly useless post except for the fact that we know there is definitely a company here that does it.

It may have been All-Color....

http://www.allcolorpowdercoating.com/AboutUs/OurFacility.aspx

Based out of Oregon, I hear they do good work.

I'll call them tomorrow them Smile Google said they were the only one, but I wanted to make sure there wasn't another option.

So the guys on national sites are assholes so I don't want to ask a dumb question and deal with flaming.

Tim's wheels are painted black and I think they look really good and I have seen a few people do vettes just like that....does powdercoating just say on better or what are the advantages?

Hey speaking of powdercoating wheels.. How well does it stand up to the road and test of time factor? I mean how durable is it?

Well, you could always do the Plasti- dip. I know people that have done that and it turned out real nice, even with daily driving. plus its removable.

Powder coating should hold up just as well as any factory finish on wheels. Most places use an automotive clear coat on top of it anyways. The only down side to powder is that if you rub a curb or chip it some how, you can't just do a touch up like you could with paint.

Here's a Vette with plasti-dip wheels for reference.... it would be WAY WAY cheaper than doing them powder coated.

Powder coat is much more durable than paint, it is the best way to go for wheels. The plasti dip is a rattle can solution and looks good on low res photos, but the ones I have seen in person look like ass. But that might be because of the skill level of the painter

There is a guy out in Mount Horeb that runs huge batches of black stuff. He quoted me 50 bucks a pop to coat wheels black but I had to have them prepped before they were dropped off.

Powdercoat is VERY durable. Far superior to paint.

I have had powdercoat chip and not flake. Proper prep is crucial as is having it cured properly.

lol yeah I just called all color...50-65 per wheel depending on the finish. I have to have them prepped before he does them, so he wants me to take them over to Stripmasters for media blasting which is about 35 per wheel. So I'm looking at about 350-400 with a ton of running around.

Oh, and I have to take the wheels off and get the tires taken off...holy fuck.

I wish there was a one stop for all this bullshit. Dwight, PM me your friends number please Smile

There is, it's called new wheels, but it costs more, but you'll have extra wheels.

I had stripmasters strip a set of rims for me. The shit they use is WAY too aggressive IMO, or at least it was for paint. I had to prime the shit out of my wheels to get them to not look textured.

I may have been way off with my shitty memory on the wheel prices, I think it was cheaper than that out in mt. horeb.

i know someone that JUST got their wheels powdercoated by all color...
you gotta get the tires taken off then bring them to stripmasters for media blasting, then back to all color for powdercoating...all that cost him $311 (pretty sure he mentioned the tires were already off...so add tire removal to your total unless you can get someone to pull your tires off for you)...

FUCKKKKK THAT! Laughing
Im gonna just rattle can my shits again. Wink Its probably gonna cost less than $50...it will hold up just fine.

for ZO_SICK: heres a link to your vette bro that painted his C5 wheels himself...they look pretty good to me... http://howtopaintwheels.com/

my current wheels, I painted them pretty rushed, started at around 2pm and got done by like 8, we barely let them dry and I was already driving around on them...hahaha...this time around, I'm gonna take my time with all the prep work and let all the paint cure properly before I try driving on them...should turn out nice.

whoa. Tim, you are a lot better at the interwebz than I am! Thanks for all the info dude. I don't really care about the cost as much as I do having to deal with driving all over the fucking country and deal with 3 different companies over the span of 2 weeks dropping off and picking up wheels from everywhere.

You should let me know when you redo yours, and we should follow this guys write up? Thoughts? I'm willing to give that a shot and if I don't like it then I can deal with all the fucking bullshit involved in powder coating Smile

^ Ive heard of people using both types of paint.

If you decide to just paint, I'd use the Duplicolor wheel paint. I did a set of wheels for one of my friends a few years back (without removing tires) in the dark graphite color. We put a couple of coats of clear engine enamel over it, and they still look great to this day. I think duplicolor has a satin black and a gloss black depending on what look you were going for.

I'm going to follow those instructions to a tee. Those wheels turned out awesome. I really wish I could see them in person tho...
