Anything i should look for in one?

Currently looking at a 2005 evo 8 with 50k miles on it
there asking 16.5k

The car is a full bolt on tuned on evoscan which states close to 395whp on pump. The car is ready for e-85 which will hopefully be another 50-75hp and can have it tuned for it if buyer wishes. The mods include: full tbe, megan o2 housing, megan racing exhaust manifold, injen uicp and licp, turbo xs intercooler, spec stage 3+ clutch kit, kelford 272 cams, filter, tial bov, ets mini battery, 1000cc injectors, tein type s lowering springs, a-pillar triple gauge pod, aem tru-boost, aem wideband, walboro fuel pump, vortex generator, and lastly upgraded headlights. All parts minus the headlights and tbe have been on the car for less than 1k miles.

If it were me to buying modded evos...I wouldn't . Knowing how I beat on my car and if the person said they dont launch/race/ track they're straight up bullshitting u. I'd buy a car that's stock and mod it on my own terms, that way you know it's done right and not half assed and you'll know of all the problems that do arise, if any...but that's imho.

Especially with the car as modded as it is. Price and mileage on the car seems very fair I'd say. The mods are done in pretty good order, except if you were to purchase it i'd skip on the ebay ic and the ebay manifold. Ic heatsoaks terribly, the manifold is bound to crack and the log style manifold is proven better unless you're dealing with proven manifolds that come with aftermarket turbos....which cost $$$$(900+). Compared to the megan $200 one. Tein springs aftertime will fuck up your struts..but with 50k miles they might be needing some tlc anyways. Clutch and everything else are fine..the spec iono if it's a puck style, but like all clutches you get used to them. Tial bov, blows ass and it messes up the maf. His kelford 272s are one of the most aggressive cams..comparable almost to jun's and what not. There's no springs/retainers, so your rev is limited to stock and overreving could become a problem very fast due to the clearance/durations of the cams.

Dyno numbers from evoscan is meangingless..i don't care how accurate they have the weight of the vehicle and what not. Get it checked by an actual dynojet so #'s are easily compareable to others, if you're worried about #'s. Making 395 on stock turbo with those mods seem a big aggressive...if it even makes that number(a bit skeptical..but knowing what evos can make on pump it's doable..just not as safe as some might want). And finding out actually tunes it. Its from MO, so he might've gone thru Mellontuning from the forums, if it's mellon then he's a great tuner..that way you could ask him about problems if there are any. If not, just find out who it is and post up the name. I'm sure I can give you some of the lowdowns on them, if they're a vendor or anyone big on evom. Good Luck!!

P.S. Only evo I'd ever purchase would be buschur built cars..built/tune/installed directly thru Dave and his crew. Period.

Good luck!

No clue who mike is, unless he's on evom with vendor i'd know. If not he's prolly a local. And alot of times there is plenty of "tuners" that like to help fiddle around with people's cars and what not.

not that this shows much but his A/F is a 11.7 at WOT in 2nd, and it was street tuned, which personally i think is a better way of tuning than dyno

This is what he told me,

His name is mike, he tunes DSM's, he has a talon that runs a low 10, he is a popular tuner in the southern MO area

Here is the way I look at it. Its the classic girl next door verses slut argument. Lets say the modded evo is the slut. Sure its fun to drive! You know it performs and I'm sure it will scare the fuck out of mom and dad when you bring it over for christmas dinner, but....after a few romps in the sack you start to think about it. Hummm, I wonder where she learned that move and why does it burn when I piss now. You just don't know how hard those previous miles were.

For all we know this Mike guy was a pimp! He flogged it every chance he got, and now that she is worn out and has no street value he selling her. I guess I would go with the non modded (Girl next door)evo! Sure she is inexperienced, but think of all the fun you will having modding it and tuning it the way you want!

Mike

PS Never trust a person by the name if mike. Razz

I personally don't trust carmax...i've had 3 accidents and 1 break in. Of those only 2 was on carmax. So yeah..

And name of mike...I think I might know who he's talking about. I think his avatar on evom is pics of a dsm. Lol, i know it doesn't help. But if it's the guy i'm thinking he's cool shit.

11.7 2nd gear is aggressive. But if car is taking it then it's alright. But that'd be up to you. Most tune meth at 12.2's. And usual pump gas tuners aka ams, and other bigger names do 11.0-11.4.

It's a good deal, but up to you ultimately.

yes you can see the evo manifold, especially since it's aftermarket. The mani cover will be off. Most stress fractures are at the flanges or the collector areas. If it's coated..of course it'll be a bit harder.

I would also buy and unmodded car so you know it wasn't beat on and also the fact that more things can go wrong since you wont have a warranty. Just go find an EVO that an old man is selling.

I have to agree with MikeyT's insight on this one. And noodles is right, no one mods the piss out of a car and doesn't run it... whether that be at the track or on the street. I might be wrong here, but I'll be the first guy to say I dont know jack shit about Evo's, or many other imports for that matter.

I prefer to buy a car that's stock and do mods myself, that way I know what is done to it and that its done right Cool

i've been in this game long enough to learn that no matter what, things are always what they seem. in this case, what i mean is that unless you are buying a car brand new off the showroom floor, you don't really know shit about it's history and can't. buying a stock car is not the solution to trying to avoid a car that has been driven hard. a car being stock guarantees nothing.

for one, even though you are buying it stock doesn't mean it always was. everyone knows that you don't get any real money back on mods when they are still on the car. for that reason, it makes sense to pull off those parts and slap the factory stuff back on. then sell your aftermarket parts and you'll make more money plus open up the market on your car as it will now appeal to more buyers. people do this all the time. just last week a guy in stl put the stock heads and cam back on his 99 vette and took off the 150 shot kit and sold it as a stock, low mile car. well, it's not like he lied about that, there's just more to the story that the new owner has no way of knowing.

i say go for it but don't jump in head over heals and buy out of lust. be smart and take along someone who knows those cars and what to look for.

To play Devils Advocate, I know people that will tell you to buy an already-modded car because someone else can take the bath on the performance parts. This is also fine, as long as the guy/girl that did the work did it correctly or had a reputable speed shop take care of it for them Cool

Dude finding an unmodded evo is almost impossible. Those things are fairly stout and hold up to mods and abuse well. If you think it's a good deal then i'd say roll the dice and pick it up. There are no guarantees in used cars whether they appear stock or not so you are always taking a chance. I'd do it if I were you.
