Nice to see you have the balls to take it out and see whats wrong with it (trans). Mad props!

I did DSM's for about a decade, and I would suggest replacing the entire unit with a known good replacement. I tried replacing parts in my tranny, fixed it, ran great for about 2 weeks, then something else would break (not the part I just put in, but something else).

I even had a master trans builder helping me, but it seemed like unseen damaged parts always made it back into the trans. Not to mention stock parts just couldn't handle the shock loading of a good launch or the 1-2 bang with a good clutch (I ran ACT 2600).

In down time alone it was worth just buying a shep/TRE/Jacks Transmission. I thought I was saving a bunch of money, but in the end I went with a professionally built trans anyways, so why didn't I just do it in the first place?! Doh.

Just passing on my wisdom and years of yanking AWD trannies. As you already know, yanking the trans isn't that hard, but after the 3rd of 4th time, it gets really old. Ha. In fact, the only problem I ever had with the car was blowing trans/transfer cases. Otherwise it was a solid platform.

Best of luck to you, hope to see it around this summer.

Having a trans built by shep, tre ect won't make it any stronger unless they are treating the gears. Even then they will still break. If they dont treat the gears a "built" trans isn't any stronger than a stock trans. Stock gear sets are stock gear sets... you shouldn't run into any big issues with them unless you making 600+whp.

I agree 100%, what I meant by having a built trans (even a stocker) is that it's done right the 1st time, even with stock components. My "built" trans only consisted of new synchros, shift forks, and 3rd gear, I think everything else was stock, just replaced. click.

I also never broke a gear, as kp116 stated, it would take a shit ton of power to be in that realm. Also, for the record I only ever had problems with synchros/engagement (shift forks get ever so slightly bent), never problems with gear sets or input/output shafts/bearings.

Just wanted to clarify my previous post, and I am for sure not a know it all on DSM's, just relaying my own learning experiences. Smile

Thanks for the feedback from both of you. What I know from before I took it apart the problems I had were... whenever putting the car into gear from neutral it would feel grindy and once in first whenever you lift up on the clutch to move sometimes the shifter would pop back into neutral. Also it would grind some when putting it into reverse from neutral, I don't remember if it would ever try to pop back into neutral though. Once moving it wouldn't ever pop into neutral but it didn't feel as smooth as it should when shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd and so on.. and when in a higher gear like 4th and 5th the clutch would slip a lot. Sometimes I had to even watch it going 70 to make sure it didn't slip. That's about it for the major problems, not counting never having a catback exhaust on the car, since it rusted out with the previous owner, and the paint fading.

So... from what I've looked at so far. (just had a quick minute glance so not exactly sure yet) I can see that the third fork has wear on it and also maybe the first and second. Need new shift forks, syncv rings, and first gear.

I don't know much about cars, and am trying to learn so if I didn't word something right feel free to tell me. I'm sure there are a lot of other things I need too inside of the transmission, figure I'll replace things that look like they might not make it another year or so.. and also the slave cylinder, throw out bearing, and timing belt.

I think it may have been you before that I talked to about some of this kp116? If your number is 507-31#-####

We were talking about the trans synchros being gone.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback, i'm sure you all know a lot more than me about cars! Razz

I do hope to learn though.

Wasn't me. Someone local that is insanely good with transmissions is tim zimmer out of Waukesha. Just look up tmz performance and get his number.

Yeah I've actually looked up TMZ before and called to talk to them, they seemed to have exactly what I may need. I think I've found an alternative source to get the transmission running again.. what i think I'm going to need and what i've looked at getting would inc.

New 1-2 fork

New 3-4 fork- 2G

New all bronze synchronizer blocker rings 1-5 including double synchro 2nd, OEM- 2G style

New 1-2 synchronizer hub
New 1-2 synchronizer slider

New 1-2 synchronizer springs
New 3-4 synchronizer springs

New 1-2 synchronizer shoes
New 3-4 synchronizer shoes

New seals

New tapered roller bearings on each end of intermediate shaft

New 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R roll pins

New center diff spider gear side shims

The rest of the parts seem to be fine in the transmission after looking at them. I'm thinking all of the gears are fine, aren't they known to take a beating and do fine up to 600 hp? I'm not looking to make a lot of power even if I make some small upgrades. Just need to get everything rolling as daily driver right now. Eventually I'll go for a bigger turbo and stuff but for right now I just have 3in catback, Hallman manual boost controller, boost gauge, a crushed 1g dsm bov. I'm thinking turboback exhaust eventually, some work with the dremel up in there also, new turbo, bigger fuel pump. I've got my clutch and flywheel ready to go and then these parts for the tranny is what i'm looking at. I just don't want to miss anything important and have to take it all apart again.

Here is the guide I used to get the tranny out, with the help of my mechanically inclined dad of course since i'm new to all of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGDw73GoIeE

and then i've been looking at these links..

http://dsm.centralcore.org/TrannyRebuild/TrannyRebuild3.htm

http://www.tmzperformance.com/DSM%20AWD%20Transmission%20Rebuild.html

http://dsm.centralcore.org/TrannyRebuild/TrannyRebuild1.htm

http://www.twingles.com/ideck/rebuild3/dretranny.htm

and most of all i've been eyeing

http://www.jackstransmissions.com/collections/awd-rebuild-kits/products/kit-b-economy

for parts. I'll look into some more stuff before I make any decisions.

Figure I can get the timing belt and stuff like that at autozone or oreilly. Though I found the guy working at oreilly to be very rude while the guy at autozone actually seemed interested and wanted to know about my car. A young asian guy that I think may drive a white/gray interga or civic of some sort. He was really friendly and said I should come out to some meets sometime. That's when the problems with everything slipping started though. So I never made it out to do anything last year.

I'm reading a lot of reviews and jacks transmission seems like a reputable place also. All over DSMtuners I see people that have evo's and eclipse's saying that they haven't had any problems w/ the economy kit even. I'm a little tight on money and of course I want to do this right, I'll weight my options, get some opinions, and go for it. Not looking to sit inside all spring playing Halo anymore lol
