As some of you know, I now own another black daily driver. Obviously black requires lots of washing to look good. Overall the previous owner did a pretty good job of keeping it scratch/scuff free. I would like to do the same. Can you guys recommend reasonably priced materials (wash mitts? microfiber towels?) to help me keep it looking nice?

I currently use a wooly wash mitt on my 240sx and dry it with a synthetic chamois. I use turtlewax ICE soap. It does a good job on the 240 and it's really dark green. I suspect there is room for improvement here.

I always tell people that caring for black paint should be not different than any other color, meaning that you should treat any car as if it has black paint!

At the minimum, you'll want two 5 gallon buckets, a good wash mitt, quality soap, and a good drying towel. Sourcing quality detailing supplies locally is always a trick. The buckets shouldn't be too hard to find, Lowes or Home Depot probably have them. For a wash mitt see if you can find the microfiber mitts that look like mini dreadlocks, they work pretty well and are affordable. For soap, go with Meguiars Ultimate Wash n Wax, you'd be hard pressed to find a better over the counter soap. For drying go with waffle weave microfiber, some brands are better than others with regards to absorbency, but they should all be better than a synthetic chamois.

So my 2cents.. Take some time and wax it. This will help it look good after every wash. Crazy fact but how you wash and dry your car is what puts the swirl marks in the finish. Follow what C H said...and if you want to get all crazy about it... When you dry the car don't rub it with the towel...just lay the towel flat and dab it dry... crazy I know!!

I have had black cars for some time now.. It's all about how much you want to work at it.
I always will clay bar it first, if you want a nice finsh you should always start there. It's not that hard to do and you will love how it turns out after your done. Step two- Apply and remove a cleaner wax. Use a buffer for this if you have one. Step three- for wax I really like Meguiars- NXT Tech Wax 2.0. Apply it with hand applicator pad (trick is to not use alot of wax) apply a thin layer to small parts of the car at a time... Hood, fender, roof, you get the point.... Take the wax off first with a cotton towel, then go over the car last with a microfiber towel.. This wax is easy to take off of the car and on black you need all the help you can get..

After you do all of that... to keep it looking nice after you wash it. Use Meguiars Quick Detailer, it really helps your car look good between waxing.. But most of all it only takes like 10 min to do. Besides if you clay bar it, you will already have the Quik Detailer as part of the waxing..
All and all just tell everyone to stay back 25feet and it will always look good.. Very Happy

The good news is the car is already waxed. I know that washing it is what causes the scratches, which is why I asked. The quick detailer is a nice tip. Honestly, I pretty much hate detailing work so the odds of me going ape shit are pretty much nil. The paint looks great now and I just want to keep it that way. Long gone are the days where I have time to sit in my garage for 6 hours making everything perfect.

I suppose it's the price you pay for black paint. (or as connor mentioned, any paint). I don't wash my 240sx religiously because I know it increases the odds of scratches. I clean it up when I want it to be seen. For the most part, all that needs cleaning is the tail lights. I am half joking.. I get some exhaust grossness on the rear bumper.

Thanks fellas.
