Change of plans. Sold the 4wd truck and bought a 06 2wd dually. Has higher miles on it. Came with a few mods. Exhaust, cold air, ats exhaust manifold, ats tripple disc converter, and a heavy duty rebuilt trans. I already changed the exhaust, and rebuilt the front end. Working on cleaning it up and fixing oil leaks.

So the new truck started knocking very badly after about 12,000 miles. We pulled it apart and found broken rings. Someone did the worst rebuild i have ever seen at some point on this thing. We will correct all of those fucks ups, and make it stronger in the process

getting started.

Enigine is out.

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 Engine12
1100lbs of scrap metal at this point.

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 Engine13
This is the hole that was making all the noise. Sweet cross hatch.

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 Engine15
Like i said, worst rebuild ever.

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 Engine16
Still has some factory cross hatch under that sweet sweet hone job.

The Rottler diamond hone will take care of this mess.

This one is for a 12valve, but i will coat my pistons just like this guy.

How did you get your money tree to grow in this drought we had this year?

This ended up being the real problem with my engine. Guess they tend to rattle with the rod bushing gone.

Let the rebuild begin. Old nasty looking block.

Cleaned and blasted block.

Surfacing the block.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130210

I polished the rods.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 2012-114

Then balanced them.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130211
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130212

Did a little head porting. Nothing crazy. Did some work in the bowl area then cleaned up the exhaust. Intake side can't be ported unless the factory intake is cut off. Which is not needed until 1000hp or so.

Got kinda lazy on the picture taking. But here is the short block.

Cleaned half a million miles of oil and dirt out of the engine compartment.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130220

Don't need this.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130221

And back in the truck it goes.

Truck has been running since the end of feb. or so. Had a noisy belt issue. Took two belts, a belt tensioner, and an idler pulley to fix that. Stupid thing has an oil leak that i can't seem to find or fix. I have put two rear main seals in since the engine went back in and it still has a leak. Thinking i might have to pull the oil pan and change the pan gasket. Not sure why it would be leaking, but all the oil is coming from down low.

Decided to put the truck on the dyno. Found out that the factory cooling system builds a lot of pressure at 4,000rpm (factory rev limit is 3200). Blew a frost plug out the side of the block. So much for my nice clean painted engine.

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130510

Billet frost plugs cannot blow out under pressure. I left the front plug because it is easy to get to if it decides to go. And there are a bunch of plugs inside the head. If they go it mixes oil and coolant in a hurry.
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130511

I also got a Fleece Performance coolant bypass kit. Supposed to let cylinders 5&6 run cooler. As well as cure the pressure problems with high rpm (high for a diesel anyhow).

Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130513
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130514
Hillrod race truck - Page 2 20130515

Seems to run a bit cooler with the bypass installed. It eliminates the coolant from the factory trans cooler which i liked. Trans was 40 degrees cooler than the engine. Before the bypass it would stay around coolant temp.

I have added a few other things since the engine was back in the truck also. Did head studs, changed to early style rockers, hamilton pushrods on the exhaust side, and tossed on a S&B cai. The truck is now EFI Live tuned by Dan Clarke at Dans diesel performance.
