| I want to put a sub and amp in the car to augment the stock bose system. The stock system has a small sub under the passenger seat that I intend to keep for decent midrange bass but I want to add that little something extra. I don't need something to win shows with, just a combo that will give a good clean bass hit. I can install all this shit, but literally know nothing about the actual equipment itself.
Looking for input on a good Sub/Amp pairing somewhere in the upper mid level and hoping to keep the cost around 400 bucks minus the cost of an enclosure. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Let me know if I'm shooting way too low on cost too.
*note - come on you lazy ass mods, put a description in the thread listing

| For what your looking for I'd say and 10'' or 12'' sub powered by around 3-500rms watts would be enough for that extra thump.
being a hatchback you'll definitely feel it from a relatively "small" setup.
I spent about $350 (I know I'm cheap) on a Kenwood 10'' sub, Kenwood 1000 watt amp, box and all the wiring. I had some issues with it initially but i figured it out. It sounds awesome.
If you need more I know Alpine Type R subs sell for pretty decent prices and have fair quality. You'll def be getting into the +$400 range when you start getting into JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Memphis, etc. and other high end stuff.
I'd suggest simply doing the Best Buy (or comparative store) thing, and buy their warranty. Factory warranties do not cover against blown speakers, etc. Their warranties cover pretty much anything, even if it's your fault. Lots of subs need certain types of break in periods, different amp Input Sensitivity settings, and what not. If not done right you can easily blow a sub on a "perfectly matched" sub/amp setup.

| Amy went to american and got a MTX sub/amp combo and it sounded awesome but the amp had just come out and it ended up frying, then they replaced it with an alpine and now it doesnt hit as hard but still sounds good. Thats my only experience with anything sub and amp related. | |

| go to crutchfield.com
I'd get like a 10" JL sub and a 500 watt Alpine mono amp and call it a day.
JL Audio 10W3v3-2 - 239.99 Alpine MRP-M500 - 199.99
Just a bit over $400 | |

| Hey Preston, thanks for telling me what you did, that is exactly the type of help I don't need. I guess I can go to best buy and ask for the amp Preston had in his VR4 and they could special order it. | |

| I have had good luck with MTX, even with only 400 watts from an off brand amp it hits good, and Quazar can vouch for that one | |

| That Amp Franks is selling has pretty good reviews from everything I've read, might be overkill for me though since I have no intention of running dual subs. | |

im with corey it is a decent amp at a good price and it wouldn't necessarily be overkill. Most subs are 4 ohm anyway with around 500 watts rms, that amp bridged would give you just that. Personally I never like dealing with bridging amps, it just scares me. but like I said above you just run the risk of frying something and then being out that money if you buy used or online. im not saying franky would sell you something broken, but even the most professional installation guys screw something up every now and then and then whoops, there goes your amp/sub. this is all imo of course, I just like having that 4 years of "I don't give a shit, crank that baby" attitude that Best Buy like warranty gives you for $20 extra bones.

Just saying look around on forums for used stuff that works, you can usually get it for WAY cheaper than anywhere else and (MOST) forums usually have stand up members. You can also check trader rating. As for install you know there are a few people around here willing to help. This is from the same guy I bought my sub from on w3si. http://w3si.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3651Here is the link not sure if you need to be logged in. I can get the guys e-mail if you're interested. 1000x2 Clarion amp. Perfect working order. Was using sparingly for a year. $125 obo

| The amp that preston posted about will be huge overkill, and class T amps will fuck up your radio reception FYI. It is one badass amp though, and I miss the one I had. | |

MB Quart PWE 352. I bought it used this Jan. Barely used. I was advertised as barely used and I belive it. Looks mint, spider is very stiff. It's ashame their RWE/PWE subs were not good sellers. Maybe the MSRP or whatever, but I think they are VERY decent and capable subs.

| You should do an IB setup like I did. Or at least let me get mine done enough so you can hear it and decide. | |
