| Dude..... i don't even know what to say....
I'm sure that if you can get the parts, we could have a WIST "Fix It" day, and a bunch of us come out to help get it back on the street. I for one volunteer my time........ I hate seeing someones car down.

| Thanks for everything guys. I would like to tear this motor down and see what broke, but idk if i have the ability to. I know ill need a cherry picker and such, but i really dont have the resources at my house. i cant move the car either, because it requires a flat bed. Im really in a tough spot... | |

| You can tow dolly the car if you remove the rear driveshaft FYI.
I could loan you my cherry picker for a week or so if you need it. You should be able to get the engine out within a few hours.

| ok so logan came over today and we did some compression testing today. At first, the #1 cylinder was at 90psi.... but we tested the second one and it was the same. So we thought into some other possibilities, and after pulling of the timing belt cover, it looks like the car may have jumped timing. This would explain the low compression as some of the valves may have been partly open. Also, the car will still idle, but any throttle causes it to die. The car, when running, seems to get quieter, and the knock lessens. I looked into this online and it could be the tensioner pulley going bad. If this were the case, it could be a $105 pulley and getting the car re timed. Both of these would have to be done by subaru, but its better than a blown motor. The plugs look good and the oil was full, so im really hoping this is the issue. | |

| In that case, if Subaru has to do some of the work, then I would humbly suggest you take the car directly to Subaru then and have them confirm that suspicion before you buy any parts.
Not that I don't trust Logan, he is one of the best people I know for figuring out weird diagnosis, but if you think it has to go there anyway, it won't cost you any extra to be sure.

| true. i think that would be best as well. Im calling subaru west to see if this Matt guy is working. Supposedly hes the man and might be willing to stop by my house after work to check it out. this would both confirm the diagnosis and hopefully get me to be friends with him and work out some kind of deal to pick up and repair the car for cheap... | |

| Yea it was pretty much the only thing that I can think of that makes sense right now, I still am not fully convinced thats what it is, but it would make sense, not to mention we pulled one of the timing covers and there was a yellow mark on the belt that was about 3 or 4 teeth off the yellow mark on the cam....hmmmm. | |

| Yeah dude, this hasn't sounded like a blown motor at all. We all keep guessing something electrical, but timing is a better culprit. | |

| Thinking about it that yellow mark could have been for lining up a different cam gear who know but theres still a good chance matt has a non-blown-up subaru, matt have you posted it up on nasioc yet? | |

| Matt, if you need a truck and trailer to move that car, let me know. Provided your car will clear the dovetail, I can use a trailer from work. I've got the truck part covered |

| The yellow timing belt mark won't line right up, so that is irrelevant actually. (it only lines up on every 10th revolution or something of that nature)
Was it low compression on two cylinders that are on the same side of the motor? IF you jumped timing (which is possible) and the engine still runs there is a chance you didn't bend any valves.
If the tensioner is bad, it is VERY obvious.
Pull your oil filter and cut the filter open looking for debris.
Send me a PM, I can stop by this weekend and take a quick look. After assembling my engine and dealing with messed up cam timing on other motors I can likely tell what is actually wrong.. saving you a couple hundred bucks.
How are you set for tools? you are going to need to pull the radiator, crank pulley and all the timing covers. I can bring tools. After seeing all the trouble you have had, its the least I can do.
Evan
BTW, if you just have a bad tensioner that is all the further you have to pull the motor apart to get it fixed. We could actually use Logans old tensioner to get you on the road.

| ok well that sounds good. Im free all weekend and only have various hand tools, mainly a set of sockets in 1/4 in drive and some metric wrenches. The car will start and idle, but when i touch the gas it will die. The compression tests were from the same side, and they were consistent (even though they were both 90...) I looked up some videos to help with diagnosis by sound, and the one that matched my sound was a bad tensioner pulley. The car did seem down on power after we got it got it running again, and i was getting random CEL codes like MAP sensor, misfire, cam position sensor on both banks, crank position and some other one. Moparkid - Thanks for the offer, keep an eye on them PMs pending our findings | |

| I think it will have to be Sunday, Ill pm you my phone number. I can bring tools, ironically enough my motor is the only one that makes disturbing noises but it actually runs. If the cam timing is off on one side it will end up leaving you low on vac in the intake manifold and the motor won't run worth a damn. If you have bent valves and the motor needs to come apart, Ill see if the EJ20 and EJ25 valves are the same. Ill have extra valves that I can give you. Don't sweat it man... Please tell me your car is inside Evan | |

| OK so i have some news to report. I was able to tear down the subaru and see the timing. I cranked the car manually till it was at TDC and this is what i found. Heres what it should look like: This is what mine looks like: So it would seem my car has jumped timing. Guess its better than a blown motor | |
