Giving Back

A couple of years ago Cletus had mentioned the idea of doing some volunteer work as a group and building some good will in the community for us dirty old car people. I figured after spreading some Ill will (like dmv donuts) it was time to put something together.

I'm going to start with Habitat For Humanity. (No you don't need to be a bleeding heart liberal to want to help people). I called the local office today and they set up their work groups about 2 months in advance. These groups genetally max out at ten people but I don't think they would be opposed to more unless they are worried about chaos in a large group. I plan to set something up for July and a second time in September if the first round goes well.

I'd Like to get a rough idea of how many would be interested in swinging some hammers and learning a little something about home construction for a good cause. I will be putting a list of definites together when the time gets closer and this is something that we can't be backing out of if we agree to do it.

Anyone interested?

Also, I'd like to get some other suggestions from you on good volunteer opportunities, so if you know of something locally please let me know.

I did a Habitat for Humanity day with my current job. I loved it. It was a lot of fun learning how to build a house.

Shit, if it was last year I would have been in for sure. I don't know that I will have the time. Let me know when you are going to make firm plans though, I would like to participate if I can.

Well I'm not committing to them in order to get dates if nobody is going to be interested or people are going to back out.

What dates are you thinking? How long would we be working? Weekends? I could commit but need more details.

I'll try to get some more info out of them and post it up.

I'm down for this. Lets figure out some dates!

The issue with dates is this:

They have jobs that are available and dates for those jobs. Problem is each job requires a minimum number of people and that number is different by job. So I really don't want to commit to a job that requires ten people so that I can get a date and then have 4 people show up.

I'll have to think about this, maybe there is something else we can do.

I should have phrased my post differently. For me, with a known date I can request not to be put on the weekend schedule which would allow me to take part in this. I need to know 5-6 weeks out as my Meriter schedule is made in 4 week blocks.

I like the idea of helping out for a good cause. But i get one day off a week. Not to be a dick, but i dont want to spend that one day working. A car show or a money making event involving cars would be neat.

As long as I have some kind of notice, I can make sure that I'm off.

I can look into that but last time I was involved with AAH it was a big bunch of bullshit to get a sign up.
